Happy New Year!

My 2016 has been a year of great change. Starting Nomenom has been instrumental in changing my life for the better! Blogging has given me purpose and direction. To become a better, more competent writer, I started college in August. This has affected my life and my psyche in so many positive ways. In 2017, I plan to stay on this upward trajectory and also to lose more weight. I will be cooking more and will be blogging more as well. I usually don’t make any resolutions, per se, but I do see a new year as a fresh start. Okay, enough about me, this is a food blog!

I’m not sure how the rest of the world celebrates New Year’s Day, but here in Cajun Country, I believe that most of us have basically the same traditional fare. My Grandma and her daughters would prepare the “lucky” foods necessary to start the year off right. Even though I was not a veggie eater, it was stressed that I should have at least a bite of everything if I wanted to have a lucky year.

We always had ham, stuffed cabbage rolls, black-eyed peas, and macaroni and cheese casserole. Ham is symbolic of luck, cabbage represents cash money, peas are for coinage, and macaroni/noodles for long life. There are other foods in different traditions like grapes eaten one for each month of the year and if you get a sour grape, watch out for that month! Also, ring-shaped cakes are symbols of having come full circle.
